Welcome to the Student Services page of the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). At DUCE, student welfare is a central priority. The College is committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes academic success, personal development, and social well-being.

Student Services are designed to ensure that students receive the guidance, support, and resources necessary to thrive throughout their academic journey. Through a wide range of programs and facilities, including counseling, accommodation support, health care, sports and recreation, security, financial services, and cafeteria services, the College strives to create a safe, healthy, and engaging campus life.

All student support services are coordinated through the Office of the Dean of Students, which works closely with other administrative units to address students’ needs and enhance their university experience.

OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Background: The Office of the Dean of Students (DoS) is responsible for coordinating and delivering student welfare services at DUCE. Since the establishment of the College, the office has played a central role in promoting the social, emotional, and general well-being of students.

Administratively, the office operates under the Office of the Deputy Principal (Administration) and functions as a service-oriented department. The office provides guidance, counseling, advisory services, and welfare support to students, ensuring they are able to adapt successfully to university life both academically and socially.

The office serves as a vital link between students and the College administration, offering information and support that helps students navigate university systems and access essential services.

Leadership and Location

The Office of the Dean of Students is currently headed by Ms. Natu Msuya, who works with a team of four Welfare Officers responsible for different service units.

Mission of the Office

The mission of the Office of the Dean of Students is to foster a conducive and supportive campus environment that nurtures students and equips them with the values, skills, and attitudes necessary to become:

  • Responsible and ethical citizens
  • Service-oriented professionals
  • Committed members of society
  • Proud ambassadors of DUCE and Tanzania

Units under the Office of the Dean of Students

The Dean of Students’ Office operates through several specialized units that address different aspects of student life.

 

1. Counselling and Guidance Unit

The Counselling and Guidance Unit provides professional counselling services to support students’ psychological, emotional, and social well-being.

Services Offered

The unit provides assistance in areas such as:

  • Personal and emotional counselling
  • Trauma counselling
  • Relationship issues
  • Family-related challenges
  • Loss and grief support
  • Academic stress and mass failure support
  • Postponement of studies due to social reasons
  • Group counselling sessions
  • Peer education programs
  • Orientation sessions for new students
  • Para-counselling seminars for staff

    The unit encourages students to seek support whenever they experience personal challenges, emphasizing that mental and emotional well-being are essential for academic success.

2. Accommodation, health & catering services Unit

This unit oversees the coordination and management of student accommodation, health service support, and catering services.

Health Service Support

The unit collaborates with the DUCE Health Centre to ensure students receive medical attention when needed. It also facilitates matters related to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to ensure students have valid health insurance coverage.

Catering Services Monitoring

  The unit monitors food service providers to ensure that:

  • Food quality and hygiene standards are maintained
  • Food preparation environments are safe and clean
  • Reasonable food prices are maintained
  • Adequate menu variety is available
  • Cafeteria facilities are sufficient for the growing student population

3. Students Governance Unit

The Students Governance Unit coordinates matters related to student leadership and representation.

The unit works closely with the Dar es Salaam University Students Organization (DARUSO) and other legally recognized student associations.

Key Responsibilities

The unit:

  • Provides guidance to student leaders and associations
  • Facilitates leadership development programs
  • Organizes seminars, workshops, debates, and symposia
  • Encourages student participation in governance and leadership roles
  • Strengthens communication between students and College management

Through these activities, the unit promotes responsible leadership and active student participation in university governance.

 

4. Sports and Recreation Unit

The Sports and Recreation Unit promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and recreational engagement among students.

Sports Facilities

DUCE provides facilities for a wide range of sports including:

  • Football
  • Volleyball
  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Athletics
  • Tug-of-war

Recreational Activities

Students may also participate in various recreational activities such as:

  • Rope skipping
  • Sack races
  • Pool table games
  • Cultural festivals and events
  • Academic and social clubs

Sports and recreation are regarded as an integral part of student development, contributing to physical health, teamwork, and stress management.

5. Financial Services

Several financial service providers operate within DUCE to ensure easy access to banking and financial transactions for students and staff

  1. Financial Services

National Bank of Commerce (NBC)

NBC provides banking services within the DUCE campus, located near the Health Centre along Mkapa National Stadium Road.

CRDB Bank ATM

A CRDB Bank ATM is available on campus for convenient banking services.

DUCE SACCOS

The DUCE Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCOS) operates as a microfinance institution that:

  • Provides loans to members
  • Acts as a financial agent for CRDB Bank through the Fahari Huduma Programme
  • Serves both the DUCE community and surrounding areas

Additionally, several financial agents operate near Gate No. 2, supporting daily financial transactions.

 

6. Security Services

Security services at DUCE are provided by the DUCE Auxiliary Police, established under the Police Forces and Auxiliary Services Act, Cap 322 of 2002.

The Auxiliary Police Unit operates under the Office of the Deputy Principal (Administration) and plays a key role in maintaining peace, safety, and security within the College.

Key Responsibilities

The Auxiliary Police Unit is responsible for:

  • Maintaining law and order on campus
  • Preventing criminal activities
  • Protecting College property
  • Arresting offenders and ensuring public safety
  • Supervising public and private security operations
  • Conducting security awareness campaigns
  • Providing 24-hour campus surveillance
